This area of study has become a foundational part of my dissertation topic. I look forward to teaching and learning mathematics across all grade levels to support students in exercising their Rights as Learners (<a href=\"https:\/\/democracyeducationjournal.org\/cgi\/viewcontent.cgi?article=1298&amp;context=home\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Kalinec-Craig, 2017<\/a>), embracing Rough-Draft Thinking (<a href=\"https:\/\/pubs.nctm.org\/view\/journals\/mtlt\/113\/12\/article-pe107.xml#:~:text=Rough%20draft%20thinking%20is%20a,classroom%20community%2C%20including%20the%20teacher\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Jansen, 2020<\/a>), and valuing learning from struggles (e.g., <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Math-ish-Finding-Creativity-Diversity-Mathematics\/dp\/0063340801\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Boaler, 2024<\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/document\/d\/11L2cjlZvXvGFbja4Y12OxVW_4igFJM5QMq6N4IxbM9U\/edit?tab=t.0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Kamlue, 2024<\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/eric.ed.gov\/?id=EJ1067302\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Warshauer, 2015<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:36px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Fall 2023 to Spring 2025: <a href=\"https:\/\/wmich.edu\/math\/directory\/kline\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Dr. Kate Kline<\/a>\u2014The mentor who laid the foundation for my teaching and learning in elementary mathematics education. We used&nbsp;<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Big-Ideas-Early-Mathematics-Practical\/dp\/0132946971\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Big Ideas of Early Mathematics<\/a><\/em>&nbsp;as the required textbook for the MATH 1520 course at WMU. Dr. Kline was the&nbsp;one who designed&nbsp;the first math teaching methods in the new course series for elementary teachers (<a href=\"https:\/\/catalog.wmich.edu\/preview_course_nopop.php?catoid=36&amp;coid=109368\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">MATH 1520<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/catalog.wmich.edu\/preview_course_nopop.php?catoid=47&amp;coid=149625&amp;print\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">MATH 2530<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/catalog.wmich.edu\/preview_course_nopop.php?catoid=47&amp;coid=149653\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">MATH 2540<\/a>). She also taught me MATH6510:&nbsp;<em>Studies in Teaching Elementary School Mathematics<\/em>&nbsp;prior to&nbsp;my years of teaching at WMU. In that course, she challenged me to consider how we could support elementary students in experiencing productive struggle in their learning. At the time, I could not imagine how young children would learn from their struggles. However, through my ongoing research\u2014investigating the productive struggle of prospective teachers\u2014with Dr. Laura and our research teams, I have begun to see the potential for learners of all ages, from kindergarten to adulthood, to benefit from struggles that are within their&nbsp;<em>zone of proximal development<\/em>&nbsp;(ZPD; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jstor.org\/stable\/j.ctvjf9vz4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Vygotsky, 1978<\/a>). With appropriate support from knowledgeable peers and instructors, all learners can engage in struggle that has the potential to become productive struggle for their learning.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:36px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Fall 2022 to Spring 2023: <a href=\"https:\/\/hope.edu\/directory\/people\/kling-gina\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Dr. Gina Kling<\/a>\u2014The mentor who introduced me to learning and implementing various tasks that could improve our lives (e.g., planning for our retirement). Working with her also increased my awareness of providing students with agency to work collaboratively and claim their own mistakes, rather than having us point them out individually or directly. Over time, I began to see the connection to one of the Rights of the Learner from Kalinec-Craig (2017)\u2014learners have a right to claim their mistakes. In the MATH 1140 course at WMU, we used&nbsp;<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Thinking-Mathematically-7th-Robert-Blitzer\/dp\/0134683714\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Thinking Mathematically<\/a><\/em>&nbsp;as our required textbook and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.statcrunch.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">StatCrunch<\/a> as our required software tool for learning.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:36px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Course Observations<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In Fall 2021, I observed <a href=\"https:\/\/wmich.edu\/math\/directory\/grant\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Dr. Theresa Grant<\/a> teaching <a href=\"https:\/\/catalog.wmich.edu\/preview_course_nopop.php?catoid=18&amp;coid=41615\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">MATH 1500<\/a>: <em>Number Concepts for Elementary\/Middle School Teachers<\/em>\u2014the final section offered to the WMU prospective elementary teachers cohort before transitioning to a new curriculum. In Spring 2022, I observed her teaching and refining a new mathematics teaching methods course, MATH 1520: <em>Early Mathematical Reasoning<\/em>, with Dr. Kate Kline, who created the course. From Summer 2022 to Fall 2022, I continually observed Dr. Grant as she created, developed, and taught a new sequence of mathematics teaching methods courses for prospective elementary teachers, including MATH 2530: <em>Number and Computation I<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In Spring 2023, I observed Dr. Gina Kling teaching&nbsp;<em>MATH 1140: Using Data for Life Decisions<\/em>&nbsp;and reflected on my own teaching, planning adjustments to my teaching style for the same course that semester.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Similarly, although I had already observed Dr. Grant teaching&nbsp;<em>MATH 1520: Early Mathematical Reasoning<\/em>&nbsp;when it was first offered in Spring 2022, I continued my learning by observing Dr. Kate Kline teach the same course with the latest updates to all teaching materials in Spring 2025, just before I taught the course myself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For MATH 1140 and MATH 1520 for <a href=\"https:\/\/wmich.edu\/education\/grow\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">GYO<\/a> students, with support from Dr. Kate Kline and Dr. Gina Kling, I helped create accelerated courses designed to meet their needs in teaching and learning elementary school mathematics.
